Despite its small overall market size and large informal sector, we are optimistic about the Angolan automotive industry's future. Passenger car sales in Angola increased 37.8% in 2014, to 39,938 units, due to strong private consumption in the country.

With the country's economic growth largely driven by oil revenues, we expect a considerable slowdown in the rate of passenger car sales in 2016, forecasting it to grow by 8.0% y-o-y. Lower oil prices have led to a sharp slowdown in economic activity, informing our below-consensus forecast for real GDP growth in 2016 to come in at 3.7%. Furthermore, higher inflation and tighter credit conditions will also weigh on car sales, while the weakness in the currency will raise the cost of imported vehicles.

However, despite this optimism, it is important to note that the used car segment is far more developed and substantial than the new car market, as is this case in many emerging markets. We expect this to remain the case for some time in Angola, as new cars remain unaffordable for most people.

Nonetheless, a large number of foreign brands are already doing business in Angola, with competition rife in the passenger car segment. Japan's Toyota Motor reportedly dominates the passenger car segment. The lower end of the market is dominated by Chinese firms such as Dongfeng- Nissan, a joint venture between China's Dongfeng Motors and Japan's Nissan Motor, which has been operating in Angola since 2006. In addition to these brands, German companies such as Volkswagen, BMW and Mercedes-Benz have also maintained a strong presence in the Angolan autos market.
