Latest Updates And Key Forecasts
We forecast that the market will record a low 2014-2019 CAGR of 3.0% in US dollar terms. The low dollar growth will reflect a steady depreciation of the Argentine peso in 2016 as domestic firms increase spending on intermediate goods needed for production, boosting dollar outflows. Over a longer time horizon, the peso will stabilise and gradually appreciate on the back of rising foreign direct investment.
Import growth will be lower in US dollar terms than in local currency terms. The lower dollar growth rate will reflect a steady depreciation of the official exchange rate. Imports increased by 34.5% to ARS5.9bn over the 12-month period to June 2015, while they rose by only 5.8% to USD0.7bn over the same period.
Exports will remain low in comparison to imports, despite strong export competitiveness in Latin America. Export growth will be positive in local currency terms, but very low or negative in US dollar terms. Exports increased by 6.2% to ARS0.6bn over the 12-month period to June 2015, while they contracted by 17.7% to less than USD0.1bn over the same period.
The new government will improve PAMI's financial situation in order to facilitate healthcare access for the elderly population. There have been reports of shortages of pharmaceuticals, prostheses and beds in recent months. PAMI's new director since December 2015, Carlos Regazzoni, aims to reduce PAMI's debt owed to suppliers.
