BMI View: We expect the Bangladeshi medical device market to achieve one of the fastest growth rates in the world, at 1 4. 5% annually, to 2019. With little domestic production, the demand for imported goods continues to drive growth, and positive trade indicators confirm this view. This under-developed market has huge potential, but prospects will hinge upon maintaining political stability and economic growth .

Latest Updates And Key Forecasts
We forecast the market to expand at a 2014-2019 CAGR of 14.5% in US dollar terms, ranging from 9.9% for other medical devices up to 18.6% for diagnostic imaging. The market is forecast to increase from USD196.3mn in 2014 to USD385.4mn in 2019. The slightly lower growth in US dollar values reflects a projected modest currency depreciation over the period.
We expect imports to register growth in H215 on the back of the relative strength of the taka and the restoration of some degree of stability after the political deadlock earlier in the year. Imports of medical devices increased by 6.1% y-o-y in the three months to August 2015 to reach USD49.0mn.
Although Bangladesh exports very little in the way of medical devices, we believe there are positive signs that a modest domestic industry is beginning to form. Growth has been recorded in every quarter since the start of 2014 and the latest available trade data reveal that over the three month period ended August 2015, exports increased by 96.9% y-o-y to USD3.3mn.
Cancer treatment remains hugely inadequate. The country only has nine government and six private centres offering specialised cancer treatment, when it should have at least 160 cancer treatment centres in order to meet WHO guidelines. The mortality rate from cancer could grow to 13% by 2030, warns the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC), representing almost a doubling in the rate since 2005.
