BMI Industry View: The relatively low density of the medical device market means Brazil will continue to offer conside rable potential for expansion, d espite a contracting economy and a depreciating real, which is making im ported products more expensive. We forecast that the import share , which is already lower than in other parts of Latin America, will fall still further over the longer term given t he current drive to expand domestic production into new product areas through technology transfers. The recent decision to grant tax breaks to domestically-produced devices will provide an additional boost for local manufacturers.
Headline Industry Forecasts
We forecast a 2014-2019 CAGR of 8.2% in local currency terms, which is lower than the 2009-2014 CAGR of 13.4%. This reflects weaker economic growth over the forecast period including a 1.7% contraction in real GDP that we are forecasting for 2015. In US dollar terms, the 2014-2019 CAGR is much lower at 2.1%, which will see the market reach USD6.2bn in 2019. Performance will be particularly weak in 2015, when the market will see a contraction of 18.5% before returning to growth in 2016.
Imports supply just over half of the market and were valued at USD3.0bn in 2014, having grown at a 2009-2014 CAGR of 11.2% in US dollar terms and 14.9% in local currency terms. Growth rates have slowed considerably on the back of an under-performing economy and a weak currency, which has made imported products more expensive. In particular, a 30% depreciation of the Brazilian real against the US dollar between 2011 and 2014 has constrained US dollar growth rates over the past three years. We expect currency weakness will continue to weigh on import performance in 2015, with mid to high single-digit growth in local currency and a contraction in US dollars as the real continues to lose ground against the US dollar.
Exports are comparatively low at USD538.4mn in 2014, having grown at a 2009-2014 CAGR of 3.7%...
