BMI View: W e expect the market will return to growth in 2017 on the back of a brighter economic outlook, an improved business environment , supported by the pro-investment agenda of the Temer administration and a stronger re al. However, the economic recovery will be weak and gradual, which coupled with a poor labour market, will limit market growth. We anticipate the tight fiscal framework will further impact on medical device companies, which are already having margins squeezed by an unfavourable exchange rate and higher operating costs.

Latest Updates And Key Forecasts
We maintain the market will grow at a 2015-2020 of 7.0% in local currency terms and 0.9% in US dollar terms due to a weak real at the start of the forecast period . The market will return to growth in US dollar terms in 2017 after a double-digit contraction in 2016.
We anticipate that import performance will improve in 2017 on the back of a gradual economic recovery and a more stable real. Imports fell by 8.4% y-o-y in US dollar terms in Q316 and by 17.2% in the 12 months to September 2016, taking the running annual total down to USD2.2bn.
While a gradual recovery in domestic manufacturing should feed into an improved export performance in 2017, the prospect of increased trade protectionism in the US under a Trump presidency clouds the outlook in the longer term. Exports fell by 17.9% y-o-y in Q316 and by 14.1% in the 12 months to September 2016, taking the running annual total down to below USD0.5bn.
The prolonged downturn in domestic manufacturing is set to bottom out and we anticipate a gradual recovery from 2017 as the business environment improves. In the longer term, the domestic industry will benefit from government measures to stimulate domestic production and boost productivity as the stalled Productive Development Partnerships (PDP) programme gets back on track.
