Medical device imports are extremely h igh, as production is limited. Chile has generally avoided regional full membership in trading blocs such as MERCOSUR or CAN, preferring bilateral agreements such as its FTA with the USA, which has shaped medical device market trends.

The market is projected to rise by a 2013-2018 CAGR of 10.9% in US dollar terms, reaching US$1.4bn by 2018. The market has increased again rapidly since 2010 and was valued at US$0.9bn in 2013. The health reform plan in the public sector is expected to boost demand.

  • The market is dominated by medical device imports, primarily from the USA and the European Union. In the 12 months to September 2014, imports increased by 5.6% in US dollar terms, reaching US$684.5mn. The highest percentage increase was in patient aids (12.9%). Other product areas registered single-digit increases including dental products (8.2%), other medical devices (5.5%), diagnostic imaging (5.2%), consumables (3.4%) and orthopaedics & prosthetics (2.5%).

  • Medical device exports are small in value. In US dollar terms, exports registered contractions in 2010 and 2013 and recorded a 2008-2013 CAGR of 7.2%, ranging from -7.7% for orthopaedics & prosthetics to 23.0% for other medical devices. In the 12 months to September 2014, exports increased by 12.0% in US dollar terms, to US$22.3mn. Particularly strong percentage growth was evident in exports of dental products, which were around three times higher than in the previous 12 month period.
