BMI View: Croatia's economy will remain in the doldru ms over the course of this year , with only a marginal return to positive growth expected in 2015. Competitiveness issues are at the root of Croatia's problems, due to high labour costs, an inflexible labour market and cumbersome bureaucracy. Household spending will continue to struggle, amidst high unemployment, low wage growth, and battered consumer optimism.

Key Industry Trends

Podravka Looks to M&A for International Growth : In early 2015, Croatian food group Podravka opened an office in Dubai to manage its operations in the Middle East and North Africa. The company has also finalised plans for an office in Dar es Salaam in Tanzania and is planning to set up an office in Beijing in China later in the year as part of ongoing plans to expand its business internationally. The company also announced that it is looking at acquisitions as part of its goal to generate two thirds of its sales from international markets. Podravka has given itself five years to meet the target. In 2013, 56% of sales were generated from outside Croatia.

Badel 1862 Renews Search for Strategic Investor : In March 2015, Croatian alcoholic and soft drinks producer Badel 1862 renewed its search for a strategic partner. According to a statement from the company its management has decided to relaunch a public call for investors interested in a strategic tie-up and recapitalisation as part of Badel 1862's pre-bankruptcy proceedings.
