BMI Industry View: We forecast that the small Cuban market will register moderate growth of 7.6% over the forecast period, supported by stronger economic growth. The market will rely on imports from mainly Europe and China, and increasingly from Japan . US suppliers cannot compete due to the US economic embargo but opportunities will exist in a post-embargo era . Opportunities remain for other foreign companies, particularly from the fellow communist China.
Headline Industry Forecasts
We anticipate that the market will register a moderate 2014-2019 CAGR of 7.6% in US dollar terms, reaching USD182.5mn. High market growth will slow down over the 2015-2019 period, following a small rise in 2014.
Raul Castro's government will strengthen its efforts to contain imports. As a result, import performance will remain volatile, following a period of contraction evident since 2008. Imports increased by 4.8% to USD111.4mn in the 12 months to May 2015.
Cuba will remain a small exporter. The reason for the uneven export level will be the rise and fall in exports to Venezuela, which receives most Cuban exports. Following the collapse in the price of crude, an already fragile Venezuelan economy will pose additional challenges for Cuban exports. Exports contracted by 94.0% to USD0.7mn in the 12 months to May 2015.
While Cuba has a significant domestic pharmaceutical and biotechnology industry, there is very little domestic medical device production. What is manufactured tends to revolve around basic products, such as optical lenses, surgical dressings and dental supplies, and some electromedical equipment.
