BMI View: Private consumption looks set to remain robust during 2015. Unemployment has fallen steadily since mid-2013 and now stands 5.8%, well below the EU average of 9.9%. In addition to this, inflation is at historical lows of a paltry 0.1%. This will continue to support private consumption as inflation is likely to remain low during 2015 and consumers will benefit from increased income available for discretionary spending due to lower energy costs.

Key Company Trends

Budejovicky Budvar Reports Record High Volumes In 2014 : Overall beer production and exports for Czech state-owned brewery Budejovicky Budvar have reached record highs in 2014. The brewery's beer exports rose 6%, reaching 813,000 hectolitres (21.48mn gallons), which was the company's best output in the last 119 years. The company exported to 70 countries, compared with 65 in 2013. Overall beer production increased 2.5% year-on-year to 1.46mn hectolitres in 2014. The company will release profit figures in April 2015.

Spar Banner Disappears As Ahold Completes Takeover : Dutch international retailer Ahold has completed its takeover of stores previously owned by retail chain Spar. CTK reports that Ahold has rebranded the units to its Albert brand, citing the chain's director Jesper Lauridsen. The move marks the disappearance of the Interspar brand from the Czech market. Ahold bought 49 loss-making Spar stores for CZK5.2bn (USD202.47mn) in August 2014. The transformation of the stores to Albert outlets was reported to have cost EUR51mn (USD54.07mn).
