BMI Industry View: The Egyptian medical device market will remain fairly attractive in the Middle East and Africa region , due to its large size . Per capi ta medical device expenditure will be low, but there is enormous potential for growth as the country has the second largest population in the region. As production is r elatively limited, the market will remain reliant on imports. In a climate of relative political stability and positive economic outlook, the public sector needs modernisation, therefore opportunities will exist for medical device companies.
Headline Industry Forecasts
The market will record a 2014-2019 CAGR of 6.0% in US dollar terms, reaching USD830.3mn. Low per capita medical device expenditure indicates the enormous market potential in the long term. Opportunities will exist for medical companies to increase sales and market share.
Imports will continue to supply the vast majority of the market. In US dollar terms, imports increased by 21.5% in US dollar terms in the 12 months to February 2015, to USD625.3mn. Other medical devices and diagnostic imaging remained the largest import product areas. Previously, imports recorded a 2009-2014 CAGR of 10.6% in US dollar terms.
Export growth will remain positive, due in part to the effect of devaluation of the Egyptian Pound, which will increase competitiveness. Exports increased by 10.7% in US dollar terms in the 12 months up to February 2015, reaching USD96.8mn. Previously, exports recorded a 2009-2014 CAGR of 8.3% in US dollar terms.
Production will remain limited. The industry is largely confined to the production of consumables such as dressings, needles and tubing, and other medical devices such as furniture and basic dialysis products. There has been some evidence of a negative impact on local production in recent years of political instability.
