BMI Industry View : France will remain the fifth largest market in the world over our 2014-2019 forecast period, despite a fairly modest US dollar CAGR of 2.4%. Further cost containment measures to control spending on medical devices will limit underlying growth in the market, which is primarily driven by the rising healthcare needs of the aging population and the need to keep pace with new technology.

Latest Updates and Key Forecasts
We forecast the market will record a 2014-2019 euro CAGR of 4.7%, slightly higher than the 2009-2014 CAGR of 4.3%. This reflects higher economic growth over the forecast period. In US dollar terms, the 2014-2019 CAGR will be lower at 2.4%, due to a weak euro during the early part of the forecast period, taking the market value to USD16.5bn.
Medical device imports will continue to fall in US dollar terms in H116 as the euro remains under pressure from a strong US dollar. Imports will register positive growth in euro terms on the back of higher economic growth, although cost containment measures within the health sector will weigh on growth rates. Imports were on course to register mid single-digit growth in 2015 after a 5.2% y-o-y euro increase in 9M15. Imports fell by 13.7% in US dollars over the same period.
France's long standing competitiveness issues will hinder export growth, although it will see some benefits from a cyclical upswing in the eurozone economy. Exports were on course to register a double-digit contraction in US dollar terms in 2015 after posting a 16.7% y-o-y fall in 9M15. Exports grew by just 1.4% in euros over the same period.
The government will continue to ramp up support for the domestic medical device industry under its Medicine of the Future programme, which was launched in 2015. A steering committee, which met in December 2015, will present a roadmap outlining the programme framework to key ministers by the end of Q116. In addition, funding for the FABS biotech accelerator fund set up in November 2015 will increase to EUR340mn.
