BMI View: We expect Indonesia to remain one of the fastest growing medical device markets over the 2014-2019 period, expanding by a CAGR of 14.6%. A shift towards more advanced medical equipment in the country, the expansion of private healthcare providers, increased government spending on healthcare and infrastructure development projects will spearhead growth; however, financial sustainability of the national health insurance programme remains a concern.

Latest Updates And Key Forecasts
In US dollar terms, we project the medical device market to rise by a CAGR of 14.6%, which should take it from an estimated USD606.7mn in 2014 to USD1.2bn in 2019. By individual product area, the CAGRs are expected to range from 20.8% for dental products to 8.9% for consumables.
The weakening of the local currency against the USD resulted in falls in most of 2015. However, we expect import performance to pick up on the back of rising, real demand for medical devices. On a quarterly basis, imports to April 2016 rose by 29.3% y-o-y to USD144.2mn, and grew by 11.7% to USD632.8mn for the year ending in April 2016.
Exports are likely to continue to fall. In US dollar terms, exports to April 2016 fell by 39.4% to USD35.2mn.We note that export performance has been negative since Q314. Exports for the year ending in April 2016 fell by 50.0% to USD135.4mn.
An expansion of private healthcare providers will bode well for medical device companies. Beyond improving the level of healthcare access in Indonesia, additional private healthcare facilities will also affect the flow of patients in the country. This will be critical for innovative firms as it is expected that more middle-income households that can afford high-value treatments seek these at private healthcare providers, as only a small proportion of public hospitals are specialised (18% in 2013).
