Ireland Food & Drink Report

BMI View: We have long been bullish on the Irish growth story. This view played out in 2014, with recent data from the Central Statistics Office showing real GDP growth came in at 5.0% for the year. This confirmed our view that Ireland would be the fastest growing eurozone economy in 2014. This trend is set to continue in 2015, with the country's recovery built on solid foundations. Domestic demand will undoubtedly play an increasingly significant role driving growth over the coming quarters with Irish households spending again in 2015, and private consumption set to play a bigger role driving growth. As growth starts to filter down, we expect robust food consumption growth in 2015 and over our forecast period to 2019.

More Than 200 Jobs May Go at Mondelez : In March 2015, Mondelez Ireland announced plans to slash more than 200 jobs, including 160 at the firm's Cadbury chocolate manufacturing plants. The company will close its gum-base production unit in Tallaght in early 2016, resulting in the loss of 45 permanent and 17 contracted roles. Mondelez said the decision to shut the plant followed an in-depth review into several factors, including the cost of production that is about twice as expensive as other similar plants. Mondelez announced separate proposals for its other Irish plants at Coolock in Dublin and Rathmore in Kerry, which include cutting up to 160 roles across both sites. Meanwhile, the company intends to make an EUR11.7mn...
