BMI View: The l ow global oil price environment continues to wei gh on Kazakhstan's hydrocarbons intensive economy , thus negatively aff ecting the entire retail sector including the food and drink industry. We believe that persistent economic headwinds will prevent any meaningful growth in the food and drink industry over the short term, but note considerable long-term potential for multinational investors thanks to the country's large consumer base by regional standards and steadily rising incomes.

Key Trends & Industry Developments

  • Chinese company Rifa Holding Group plans to invest USD200mn in Kazakhstan's meat production and processing over the coming five years, predominantly for export to China.

  • UAE-based AMK Metal Fzco is planning to invest USD30mn into the construction of a livestock farm and meat processing plant.

  • Weak private consumption outlook continues to weigh on growth in the food sector, with the majority of gains in local currency terms during 2016 being driven by elevated inflation, rather than real growth.

  • Alcohol consumption is relatively low and we see substantial scope for growth over the medium-to-long term as the disposable incomes rise and the country's youthful population continues to expand.
