BMI View: D evelopments in the natural resource markets, mainly the possibility of a production freeze by OPEC and Russia, substantiate the belief that the trough is already a thing of the past for the Kazakh economy. We anticipate g rowth to pick up , especially in 2017, during the Astana Expo, and to translate into higher household income later in the forecast period. Only the country's high inflation remains a substantial concern as it is unclear whether the central bank's expansionary monetary policy will not give another boost to prices.

Latest Updates & Industry Developments

  • A couple of international players joined Kazakhstan's food & drink market in 2016: Carrefour opened its first supermarket in February and McDonald's inaugurated its first restaurant in March. Both firms are planning to grow to 15 outlets in the medium term.

  • FoodMaster, the largest dairy producer in Kazakhstan has secured a EUR15mn loan from the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development to finance its capital expenditures programme.

  • Kazakhstan's central bank has cut interest rates in response to slowing inflation. Even though price growth remains in the double digits, the bank feels that lower borrowing costs could stimulate credit markets and boost economic growth.

  • We are forecasting solid nominal growth in household spending on food, which will average 9.4% over the next four years. Gains in the first half of the forecast period will, however, be erased by high inflation.
