BMI Industry View : T he Norwegian medical device market is limited by the size of the population, but enjoys above average per capita spending of USD300. The market will continue to be import-led with much of domestic production geared to the export market .
Headline Industry Forecasts
We forecast that the Norwegian medical device market will grow at a 2014-2019 CAGR of 3.9%, from USD1,529.2mn in 2014 to USD1,853.1mn in 2019. Growth will range from 2.5% for patient aids up to 5.1% for other medical devices. This will make Norway the second fastest growing market in Western Europe, behind the UK.
Medical device imports supply over 75% of the market and were valued at USD1,190.7mn in 2014, having grown at a 2009-2014 CAGR of 5.6% in US dollar terms and 6.8% in local currency. The running annual import total fell to USD1,082.5mn in the 12 months to June 2015, representing a y-o-y dollar decline of 4.3%. Currency weakness will impact on US dollar values in 2015.
Exports of medical devices increased at a CAGR of 7.2% in US dollar terms between 2009 and 2014, although this was insufficient to offset a widening in the balance of trade deficit to USD832.6mn in 2014. Currency weakness is impacting on US dollar values in 2015 and has contributed to a y-o-y dollar decline of 4.8% in the running annual export total to USD333.8mn for the 12 months to June 2015. Furthermore, we believe that exports will continue to be negatively impacted by weak growth within the eurozone.
Domestic production is relatively small scale with larger producers geared to the export market. Reported output is low at less than EUR100mn, but actual production is substantially higher as the official figures exclude data for the consumables and diagnostic imaging sectors due to the low number of producers.
