Qatar Consumer Electronics Report

BMI View: Our positive outlook for Qatar's consumer electronics market is underpinned by high consumer spending power, rapid population growth from the influx of migrant workers, and the government's continued commitment to investment in the ICT sector, as part of its goal to reduce the country's dependence on hydrocarbons. Qatar's wealthy consumers will drive value growth in the consumer electronics market through take-up of high-end smartphones, tablets and TVs. Mobile operators Ooredoo and Vodafone will contribute to this trend, as they encourage subscribers to migrate to 4G mobile services and increasingly target consumers with multi-play service offerings, compatible with multiple device ownership. Meanwhile, the government's expansionary policies have resulted in a rapidly growing population of migrant workers to support the construction and hospitality sectors. This is in turn driving volume growth in the consumer electronics market, while an expanding tourism sector is boosting demand for AV devices.

Expenditure Projections

  • Computer hardware sales: We forecast sales of USD585mn in 2014 and forecast this to rise to USD863mn by 2018, a CAGR of 9.9% in US dollar terms. Tablets will be the fastest growing form factor and will overtake notebooks in unit sales terms in 2015.

  • AV sales: We forecast growth to increase from USD400mn in 2014 to USD556mn in 2018, a CAGR of 8.6% in US dollar terms.

  • Handset sales: We forecast growth to rise from USD136mn in 2014 to USD205mn in 2018, a CAGR of 11.5% in US dollar terms. Intense competition between leading international vendors and newer vendors from China as well as migration to 4G LTE mobile services will maintain smartphone demand growth.
