BMI View: South Korea will be one of the slower growing markets within BMI's Asia Pacific region, although it will still outperform other mature markets such as Japan, New Zealand and Australia. Medical device imports will come under further pressure from locally produced products in certain sectors. Although the domestic manufacturing industry remains fragmented, the number of producers has more than doubled in recent years and domestic output will continue to see steady growth as South Korea seeks to further reduce its reliance on imported products, whilst boosting its share of the global market.

Latest Updates And Key Forecasts
We maintain that the market will register a 2014-2019 CAGR of 6.2% in local currency terms and 5.2% in US dollar terms, taking the value to KRW7.7trn (USD7.0bn). South Korea will remain the third largest medical device market in the Asia Pacific (APAC) region behind Japan and China.
We anticipate imports will continue on their upward trajectory in 2017, but economic headwinds including a new tough anti-corruption law will weigh on import performance, which slowed sharply in October 2016. In the 12 months to October 2016, imports grew by 13.1% in Won terms and by 9.3% in US dollar terms, taking the running annual total to KRW3.9trn (USD3.4bn).
We expect exports will remain subdued during 2017 in light of the slowdown in global trade. Export growth turned negative in October 2016 after a mixed performance in the first nine months of the year. In the 12 months to October 2016, exports grew by 6.7% in Won terms and by 3.2% in US dollar terms, taking the running annual total to KRW3.0trn (USD2.6bn).
Medical device production will continue to see steady growth supported by the government's healthcare industry promotion plan. Medical device output has recorded high-single digit growth over the past three years with output topping KRW5.0trn (USD4.4bn) in 2015. Exports outpaced domestic sales in 2015 in line with the government drive to boost the industry's share of the global market.
