BMI View: Rapidly changing consumer preferences mean that legacy food and drink manufacturers and grocery retailers need to innovate to keep up with demand. While we hold a favourable outlook for household spending over our forecast period, competition in the industry remains high, with niche and offshoot players growing in popularity and taking away market share from the established giants. The industry has become one focused on value rather than volume, with premiumisation a key trend over the next few years.

Latest Updates & Industry Developments

  • A recovery in consumer spending and changing patterns of behaviour are resulting in promising trends in premiumisation, where the industry now aims for value over volume.

  • Niche and offshoot products are helping to drive the industry as more consumer switch away from traditional food companies. The acquisition of Whitewave Foods by Danone in July 2016 is an example of this, due the former's plant-based alternatives portfolio.

  • In the drinks segment, formerly dominant categories such as commercial beer and carbonated soft drinks will continue to experience stagnating sales, as consumers increasingly favour more personalised products (craft beer) or healthier alternatives (mineral waters, fruit juices). High-end spirits, especially whiskey and rum, will be another outperformer.

  • Online grocery sales becoming more competitive and crucial for the long-term future of the industry. Wal-Mart's USD3.3bn acquisition of Jet.com in August 2016 is the retail giants attempt to challenge Amazon in the e-Commerce space.
